THE ANNUAL AFRICAN PHILANTHROPY AWARDS [AfIA] PROGRAM IS OPEN TO ALL AS LONG AS WHAT EVER YOU ARE DOING IS FOR AFRICANS AND AFRICA; THIS OFFER IS VOID WHERE PROHIBITED.


AFRICAN ACHIEVERS INTERNATIONAL. ("AfIA") AND NILE AFRICAN DEVELOPMENT (“NAD”), A UNITED KINGDOM COMPANY AND CHARITY RESPECTIVELY, ARE THE OFFICIAL SPONSOR AND ADMINISTRATOR OF THE ANNUAL AFRICAN PHILANTHROPY AWARDS [AfIA]. BY PARTICIPATING IN THE  AFRICAN PHILANTHROPY AWARDS [AfIA] PROGRAM, IN ANY FORM, YOU AGREE TO THESE OFFICIAL RULES.


STATEMENT OF PURPOSE


The Annual AFRICAN PHILANTHROPY AWARDS [AfIA] is designed to recognise outstanding philanthropic achievements and to serve as a focal point for celebrating the work being done in the nonprofit sector foe Africa and around the world.


DEFINITIONS


1. "Achievement Story" means any text, video, pictures and other content or information submitted through the AFRICAN PHILANTHROPY AWARDS [AfIA] Website after following the link included in the confirmation e-mail sent after one completes a Registration.


2. The "AFRICAN PHILANTHROPY AWARDS [AfIA] Program" means all aspects, and phases, of any kind or degree, of the 8th Annual AFRICAN PHILANTHROPY AWARDS [AfIA], and all activity related thereto, from the point in time when submissions are first accepted through the period following the award show when prizes are fully distributed.


3. A "Business" means an ongoing for-profit enterprise, of any business form, that (i) was formed or organised in the United Kingdom or Kenya and (ii) has its principal place of business in the United Kingdom.


4. The "AFRICAN PHILANTHROPY AWARDS [AfIA] Website" means the website located at www.africanachievers.org and all associated webpages which deal with any aspect of the AFRICAN PHILANTHROPY AWARDS [AfIA] Program.


5. An "Individual" means an actual living person and not an entity that is deemed a "legal person."


6. "Nomination" means the shortened entry form, available through the AFRICAN PHILANTHROPY AWARDS [AfIA] Website or submitted by means of the post or email, to be used by Nominators when inviting another individual or entity to enter into the AFRICAN PHILANTHROPY AWARDS [AfIA].


7. A "Nominator" means an Individual or entity that wants to enter someone into the AFRICAN PHILANTHROPY AWARDS [AfIA] besides (i) him/her/itself, or (ii) an organisation that he/she/it is an authorised representative of.


8. A "Nominee" means an Individual or entity that submits a Registration and Achievement Story on his/her/its own behalf.


9. A "Participant" means an Individual or entity that participates in the AFRICAN PHILANTHROPY AWARDS [AfIA] Program, in any way, and to any degree, including, without limitation, as a Nominator, Nominee, or Voter.


10. A "Registration" means the full entry form, available through the AFRICAN PHILANTHROPY AWARDS [AfIA] Website or submitted by means of the post or email, the completion of which is required to be eligible to contend for a AFRICAN PHILANTHROPY AWARDS [AfIA].


11. A "Voter" means an Individual that casts a vote for a Nominee as part of the public voting for the AFRICAN PHILANTHROPY AWARDS [AfIA] Program.


AWARD CATEGORIES


There are now NEW categories for the 8th Annual African Achievers Awards [AfIA]. Before submitting your nomination, read through the Categories carefully to determine which one best fits your Achievement Story.


1. Hunger Relief & Social Support Services (1)

Awarded to the individual or charity that demonstrates the most impressive impact in the area of Hunger and Poverty Relief. This organisation may provide assistance to the homeless through social services and advocacy, hunger relief programs for the needy, or focus its efforts on aiding the impoverished anywhere they can operate. It works to provide shelter for those without roofs over their heads and drafts plans for long-term poverty alleviation especially in Africa or around the world. The African Philanthropy Awards [AfIA] for Hunger and Poverty Relief will go to the organisation that” Teaches a man to fish”, puts food on the tables and hope in the hearts of Africa’s and the world's impoverished communities.

2. Human Rights & Social Justice (2)

Awarded to the individual, charity or any organisation which isn’t a charity (conditions apply*) that demonstrates the most impressive impact in the area of Human Rights. This organisation protects our communities and our country by defending civil rights, fighting prejudice, and promoting the fundamental freedoms that should be enjoyed by all people. The African Philanthropy Award [AfIA] for Human Rights will go to the organisation that has most tirelessly and passionately defended the dignity and basic rights of the individual.

*Only in exceptional circumstances, any organisation including for profit companies e.g. Lawyers, Advocates & Solicitors firms, can enter this category as long as their services support the community in one way or the other i.e. pro-bono.


3. Health & Wellbeing (3)

Awarded to the individual or charity that demonstrates the most impressive impact in the area of Health and Wellbeing. This organisation may work to cure or treat diseases, support our sick and disabled, seek improvements in medical treatments, or promote awareness of particular health risks. Whether it is providing direct medical services, educating the public, or focusing on research, the African Philanthropy Award [AfIA] winner for Health and Wellbeing will be an organisation that has made serious strides in improving health across the globe.

Awarded to the individual or charity that demonstrates the most impressive impact in the area of Environmental Protection. This organisation redefines what it means to "Go Green." It may promote sustainable resources and environmental beautification or develop ways to combat pollution. Whatever its mission may be, the African Philanthropy Award [AfIA] for Environmental Protection will go to the organization making the world cleaner for us all.

Awarded to the individual or charity that demonstrates the most impressive impact in the area of Educational Advancement. The African Philanthropy Award [AfIA] for Educational Advancement will go to the organisation that has made the greatest strides to improve education initiatives.

It may provide economic, educational, positive media & reporting and agricultural development services, foreign policy research and advocacy; or distribute donated medical, food, agriculture, and other supplies to those in need. The African Philanthropy Awards [AfIA] for Disaster Relief and Aid will go to the organisation whose work has provided the most comfort during times of crisis in Africa or around the globe.

Awarded to the individual or charity that demonstrates the most impressive impact in the area of general human services. It strengthens its community, by caring for the elderly, or nurturing the young. The African Philanthropy Award [AfIA] for Human Services will go to the organisation that's made the most extraordinary achievement on behalf of families and children.

African Achievers International Innovation Award for the Empowerment of Women and Girls is awarded to the individual or charity that seeks to find and bring to scale the most pioneering approaches to the political, economic and social empowerment of women and girls in Africa and around the globe. Founded on the premise that the major economic, security, governance and environmental challenges of our time cannot be solved without the full participation of women at all levels of society, this award supports the African Achievers International’s commitment to the advancement of women in African and globally.


9. Animal Advocacy & Services (9)

Awarded to the individual or charity that demonstrates the most impressive impact in the area of Animal Advocacy and Services. This organisation protects, defends or provides needed services to domestic and wild animals. Whether the organisation is a humane (caring) society, wildlife conservation charity, or a group providing animal training and specialty services - the African Philanthropy Award [AfIA] winner for Animal Advocacy and Services will be the organisation that has most impressively worked to strengthen the animal community.

10. Economic Development & Poverty Relief (10)

Awarded to the individual or charity that demonstrates the most impressive impact in the area of Economic Development and Poverty Relief. This organisation or individual may provide and leverage support or funding and other resources that support the quality of life, housing, neighbourhood revitalization and human services. They may also provide assistance to the grassroots programs, the homeless or street kids through social services and advocacy, economic development and poverty relief programs for the needy, or focus its efforts on aiding the impoverished anywhere they can operate. It works to provide shelter for those without roofs over their heads and drafts plans for long-term poverty alleviation especially in Africa or around the world. The African Philanthropy Awards [AfIA] for Economic Development and Poverty Relief will go to the organisation that” Teaches a man to fish”, puts food on the tables and hope in the hearts of Africa’s and the world's impoverished communities.

11. Youth Development(11)

Awards highlight contribution young people make to achieving development goals. The AfIA Youth Awards are aimed at encouraging and sustaining investment in youth-led development, and nominations will be welcome from young people, who are driving innovative projects in any number of areas, including agriculture, small enterprise, skills training, climate change/environment protection, sustainable livelihoods and poverty reduction.

This award will attempt to raise the profile and highlight the contribution of young people who are integrally involved in the process of change and are working side by side with decision-makers for a more secure future. The award will also give international, regional and national recognition to the young men and women who are selected.

 

12. Community Development & Enhancement (12)

The Community Development & Enhancement Award is awarded to the individual or charity that demonstrates the most impressive impact in the area which aims to stimulate tourism, promote the economy, create jobs, and/or a better quality of life. Entries could also be from cultural activities, museums, visitor and convention bureaus, economic development councils, and other similar institutions/organizations, including Country programs and projects, which promote and generate ecotourism and/or economic development. Charities or individuals should be running projects used to create changes in the community that also may improve the neighbourhood’s image.

To be considered, projects will do one or more of the following:

  1. increase employment and economic opportunities
  2. rehabilitate and upgrade residential housing
  3. preserve wildlife, marine and recreational areas for public enjoyment
  4. improve public safety
  5. enhance neighbourhood appearance or cleanliness
  6. improve viability of commercial areas and enhance the business environment
  7. provide programs and training opportunities to benefit youth and elderly
  8. create long-term improvements for neighbourhood liveability.

13. Philanthropic Business of the Year (Corporate Social Responsibility) (13)

Awarded to the business whose submission most successfully demonstrates its commitment to using the company's position, resources, and influence in service of broader philanthropic aims and best exemplifies a devotion to bettering lives in its community. The Philanthropic Business of the Year will demonstrate through consistent action a fuller vision of the modern company, one that embodies the virtues of a good neighbour, giving back to those around it in true appreciation of the customers and the society that make its business possible. This will be a business whose CSR aims to embrace responsibility for the company's actions and encourage a positive impact through its activities on the environment, consumers, employees, communities, stakeholders and all other members of the public sphere who may also be considered as stakeholders.


14. African Charity of the Year (14)

Awarded to the African charity whose submission truly epitomizes all things African Grassroots Development. The African Charity of the Year will be a standout amid an impressive field of truly praiseworthy nonprofit organisations; its submission will captivate and impress as the perfect crystallization of the organization's efforts to effect powerful change in Africa and around the world. Only African Charities whose annual revenue is $200,000 or more qualify.


15. African Small Charity of the Year (15)

Awarded to the charity whose submission best demonstrates the truth in the statement that "big things come in small packages." The African Small Charity of the Year will be a nonprofit organisation with annual revenue less than $200,000 that, despite its modest size, has a major positive impact on the world around it.


16. New Charity of the Year (16)

Awarded to a charity formed in the last 2 years (NOT MORE THAN TWO YEARS OLD CHARITY) that has already made a substantial impact. The winning organisation's submission will demonstrate a true sense of urgency and a determination to make positive change happen as soon as humanly possible.


17. Charity Fundraiser of the Year (17)

Awarded to the individual or charity whose submission describes the most unique and inspiring fundraiser of the year. The organisation deemed the Most Creative Fundraiser would be one that brings a personal touch and creative flare to its fundraising efforts. The success of its events will not only be measured in terms of the number of the money it raises but also in terms of the impact those efforts have on the lives of those who participate.


18. Charity Effective Awareness Campaign (18)

Awarded to the individual or charity whose submission describes the most creative and impactful awareness campaign of the year. Whether through, TV, print, radio, social media, or another medium, this is the organisation that has shaken us all from our daily usual routine and forced us to engage with the issue it advocates for.


19. Volunteer of the Year (19)

Awarded to the individual whose submission best embodies the ideal qualities of a volunteer: passion, perseverance, and heart. The Volunteer of the Year will be an individual that continuously gives his or her time and energy to further a noble cause and benefit others without financial compensation. (This can be anyone of any age)


20. Most Influential Student or Student’s Organisation (Youth Involvement) (20)

Awarded to the student (youth) or a student-run organization that has most powerfully put the idealism and energy of youth to work in service of others. The winner of this African Philanthropy Award [AfIA] will demonstrate a willingness to think big, to take on important social challenges, and to do so with an unflappable belief in the individual's ability to effect dramatic change. This can be a student’s organisation of any institution from preschool to University. Even schools are free to enter this category.


ELIGIBILITY


General Requirements


1. Residency-Global Citizen. There is NO restriction on who can be a Nominee or Nominator of the AFRICAN PHILANTHROPY AWARDS [AfIA] Program.


2. Age of Nominees. Each Nominee must be at least 18* years of age at the time that it submits a Registration. Nominations for the Most Influential Student or Student’ Organisation can be of any age. *In exceptional circumstances we can consider nominations from those under the age old 18 year.


3. Age of Nominators. All Nominators must be at least 10 years of age, and if below the age of majority, must have a legal guardian's permission at the time the Nominator makes a Nomination.


4. Self-Submittal. Third parties cannot submit Registrations or Achievement Stories; only Nominees can. If you want a third party to be considered for an AFRICAN PHILANTHROPY AWARDS [AfIA], you must submit a Nomination form. Ultimately, however, only the Individual him/herself or an authorised representative of any nominated entity may complete the Registration and Achievement Story required to be considered for a AFRICAN PHILANTHROPY AWARDS [AfIA].


5. Qualifying Nonprofit Nominees. Subject to the qualification below for the "Best New Charity" Award, a nonprofit organisation that is a Nominee will only be eligible to participate in the AFRICAN PHILANTHROPY AWARDS [AfIA] Program if (i) at the time it submits its Registration, and (ii) throughout the duration of the AFRICAN PHILANTHROPY AWARDS [AfIA] Program, the organisation is registered or unregistered but recognised.


6. Award Categories for Nonprofits. The following categories are open to qualifying nonprofit organisations but only in exceptional circumstances individuals and for profit companies may be considered: "African Charity of the Year," "Small Charity of the Year," "Best New Charity," "Most Effective Awareness Campaign by a Charity," "Most Creative Fundraiser by a Charity," "Hunger and Poverty Relief," "Human Services," "Educational Advancement," “Women and Girl Empowerment,” "Environmental Protection," "Animal Advocacy and Services" "Health and Wellbeing," "Human Rights," and "Disaster Relief and Aid"


7. Award Categories for Individuals. The following categories are open to Individuals: "Most Influential Student or Student’s Organisation" and "Volunteer of the Year"


8. Award Categories for Businesses. The following categories are open to Businesses: "Philanthropic Business of the Year"


9. Conflicts of Interest. African Achievers International, Nile African Development and Pillars of Hope International employees, officers, directors, advisors, and the immediate relatives of such persons (spouse, parent, child, sibling and spouse or "step" of each) are PROHIBITED from participating in the AFRICAN PHILANTHROPY AWARDS [AfIA]Program.


10. Compliance with Rules. In order to be eligible, and to remain eligible, for participation in the AFRICAN PHILANTHROPY AWARDS [AfIA] Program, Participants must fully comply with all of the provisions of these Official Rules.


Category Specific Requirements


1. "Most Influential Student or Student’s Organisation" An organisation, other than a Business, which may or may not be a Charity, will be allowed to compete in the "Most Influential Student or Student’s Organisation" category of the AFRICAN PHILANTHROPY AWARDS [AfIA] Program if: (i) the organisation is associated with a recognised public or private school, college or university located in one of the African Schools, Colleges or Universities, (ii) the organisation is officially recognised as a student organisation by said educational institution and (iii) the organisation's membership is principally comprised of students at such school, college or university.


2. "Small Charity of the Year" This AFRICAN PHILANTHROPY AWARDS [AfIA] is open to qualifying nonprofit organisations that have annual revenue of less than $200,000. Revenue should be calculated in the same way that is calculated on the organisation's tax returns (e.g. all sources of revenue should be included). If you are an organisation that receives substantial in-kind gifts, but immediately redistributes those gifts as part of your program services, you may qualify for a limited exception. If you believe that this is the case for your organisation, please contact info@africanachievers.org African Achievers International will determine, in its sole discretion, whether or not you qualify to have the value of the in-kind gifts excluded from your revenue total.

 

3. "Most Effective Awareness Campaign by a Charity" The principal portion of the awareness campaign described in a Nominee's Submission must have occurred on, or after January 1, 2012


4. "Best New Charity" To be eligible for this AFRICAN PHILANTHROPY AWARDS [AfIA], the Nominee must (i) be an entity organised under the laws of one of the countries as a nonprofit organisation and (ii) the Nominee must have been an organisation for not more than 2 years by the time of submission of the nomination to the AFRICAN PHILANTHROPY AWARDS [AfIA].


5. "Volunteer of the Year" To be eligible for this AFRICAN PHILANTHROPY AWARDS [AfIA], the Nominee must not receive any form of material compensation, whether as an employee or otherwise, from the charitable organisation s/he works on behalf of.


SUBMISSIONS


1. Who Can Make a Submission. Only Nominees (Individuals submitting on their own behalf or on behalf of an organisation they are authorised to represent) can enter themselves into the AFRICAN PHILANTHROPY AWARDS [AfIA] Program to compete for a AFRICAN PHILANTHROPY AWARDS [AfIA]


2. Nominators. If you are not entering yourself or an organisation you are authorised to represent into the AFRICAN PHILANTHROPY AWARDS [AfIA] Program, you must indicate that you are attempting to make an entry on behalf of a third party. When you do, you will be directed to complete a Nomination form. When a Nomination form is completed, the nominated Individual or organisation will be e-mailed and asked to complete a full Registration and to submit an Achievement Story. Any Nominations or Achievement Stories received from third party Nominators are VOID and will not be considered.


3. Elements Required for Entry. To enter into the AFRICAN PHILANTHROPY AWARDS [APIA] Program and be eligible to win a AFRICAN PHILANTHROPY AWARDS [AfIA] you must submit (i) a Nomination and (ii) an Achievement Story. When you engage the entry process on the AFRICAN PHILANTHROPY AWARDS [AfIA] Website, you will be directed to complete a Nomination. After you have completed a Nomination, a confirmation e-mail will be sent to you. After, you will then be contacted by AFRICAN PHILANTHROPY AWARDS [AfIA] to fill out your Achievement Story. Both steps must be completed in order to be considered for an AFRICAN PHILANTHROPY AWARDS [AfIA].


4. Mode of Submission. AFRICAN PHILANTHROPY AWARDS [AfIA] Nominations, Registrations, and Achievement Stories (collectively "Submissions") MAY BE SUBMITTED ONLINE, BY EMAIL OR BY POST through the entry process accessible on the AFRICAN PHILANTHROPY AWARDS [AfIA] Website or the official address and email being, info@africanachievers.org. Submissions made in any other way, including, but not limited to, by mail, e-mail, or fax will still be considered but it’s the Nominators responsibility to cover the cost of transmission or postage and also to make sure that the submission arrive on time.


5. Timing. Submissions may only be made during the submission phase of the AFRICAN PHILANTHROPY AWARDS [AfIA] Program, which runs from April 1, 12:00 am. GMT to June 20, 11:59 pm. GMT (the "Submission Period"). Any Submissions received outside of the Submission Period are VOID and will not be considered.


6. Format. Submissions that do not contain substantially all of the information requested throughout the online or paper entry process, or that otherwise deviate materially from the process (as determined by African Achievers International alone), are VOID and will not be considered.
